Chamba:A Relic Preserved in Time

“Jyoti  Thakur is the man!”, we were told, emphatically, when we were starting our planning phase to visit the Himachal. Our cousins Paplu & Debbie were stationed at a beautiful bungalow in Jammu, back then. Paplu is in the armed forces in India, and serves a rank that is senior enough and consequently enabling him to have the ‘good-life’, so to say! Passionate about taking to flight himself, Paplu almost immediately suggested that Jyoti was a one-man-shop-and-stop for any visitor in Himachal. And that, he has been ‘tried-and-tested’ by themselves as...

Foraying into 4-Oh!

You might ask, why this is a Travel Tale. This tale has travelled a long way! It started its journey decades back, and now lies in the custody of a foodie-wife who couldn’t think of anything better to gift him! To begin with, I have a problem (still) referring to him as my ‘husband’! Okay, don’t take this the other way around..its not a sad tale I am about to start on woes of a failed marriage or a beating-husband! I have this problem, because in all the 10 years of our absolutely rocking years of togetherness, I am yet to come across countable-worthy husband-like...

The Konkani Odyssey

Train rides are very contradictory in nature. Trains rides are almost always comforting, and at the same time they are incessantly long. Trains are funny. For some people, they’re the morning commute, a dreary 30 minute to 1 hour penance flavoured by coffee breath and armpits. For others, they’re Star Trek on wheels, something to obsess over and while away long afternoons with. Some read books, some plug their MP3s and MP4s, and some …doze off! But there are some train journeys that rise above this pluralistic view and make everyone go rail-crazy. Here is one of my all-time favourites:...

Kodai

It was a tiny hole-in-the wall spot of a shop, shelves glistening with shelves full of sweet little things. There were chocolates with various fillings and flavours; fluffy marshmallows in rainbow-scapes, and gorgeous marzipan in shapes fancy enough to be pulled out of fairy tales. My twins are absolutely entranced, and I’m afraid they might never want to leave. “Ok…just any ONE flavour,” I almost plead, “and then we will go.” (I say that in Bengali to them, as that’s the only dialect my two year old twins understand currently!) I was miserably and dutifully chiding the kids, while greedily...

Not a Cock & Bull Story: This Bangkok!

A place is often what you make out of it. It’s strange that when I was choosing a destination to break-away from the monotony of sound and being busy all the time, I chose Bangkok. I chose Bangkok, even when I knew that tranquility is probably not what Bangkok is famous for- rest of Thailand, perhaps,yes..but not Bangkok. Thailand- it’s well known for drawing in tourists, backpackers and sight-seers from all over the globe. There are bustling city streets, swanky upscale restaurants and popular amusement parks for families. But there is another side to Bangkok – a more personal side, a...

Dancing in Europe’s Grandest Ballroom

Venice was my first stop from London. On the RyanAir flight, I decided on a very filmy exercise..rather a Bollywood “inspired” exercise. I think it was one of the quintessential YashRaj movies which adviced that when they don’t find answers to what your heart really wants, the best way to find out is to peacefully close your eyes, and let the mind(take over from the heart) to visualise the one person/one thing that takes priority(at that particular moment). Voila! There’s your answer. So, I decided to follow suit, since I really didnt know what to expect from magical...
