Dancing in Europe’s Grandest Ballroom

Venice was my first stop from London. On the RyanAir flight, I decided on a very filmy exercise..rather a Bollywood “inspired” exercise. I think it was one of the quintessential YashRaj movies which adviced that when they don’t find answers to what your heart really wants, the best way to find out is to peacefully close your eyes, and let the mind(take over from the heart) to visualise the one person/one thing that takes priority(at that particular moment). Voila! There’s your answer. So, I decided to follow suit, since I really didnt know what to expect from magical...

The First Snowfall

First times are always special times. And I always make it a point to remember my first-times in the most fondest ways possible. Some of them are adventurous, some of them soft and subtle and some of them, so beautiful that they should remain undescribed, locked in the alleys of your mind and heart, to be unlocked only to yourself, at times when just that one single thought or memory can bring the long-awaited smile on your face! Then, there are those experiences, for which you have no one else to thank but the bounty and grace of nature. A feisty first thunderstorm, the first dance in the...

Bedwin’s Signature Chicken Chaap

The memories of the special lunch-box of Biriyani and Chaap that I often sneaked into my house has been so deep in my memories, that I eventually succumbed to the temptation of making it at home the other day. The biriyani, I saved it for another time, but the Chicken Chaap was a show-stealer, and a dish that served my guests memories of my childhood.   1 whole skinned chicken weighing about 800 gms(cut into 4) 750 gms(a coffee mug and a half) hung curd Garlic paste(from about 4 whole garlic pods) Ginger paste ( from about two inches of the rhizome) Mace/Javithri powder(about 2 large...

Nostalgic Recommendations of an Extended Weekend at Kolkata

Now, although I possibly have more than one city that has been home for me in the last 15 years, there is only Calcutta(note-not Kolkata) that can instinctively have me recommend a list of things-to-do in an extended weekend. No Mumbai, nor Bangalore, nor cities in California or Florida can come close to the gushed feeling of nostalgia that envelopes me at the sound of Calcutta. In fact, when I have visitors in Bangalore, I am at a serious lack of ideas and suggestions to give them, if they ask me what they can possibly do in this city. Calcutta has come a long way to become Kolkata. My...

La Dolce Vita..@ Purnadas Road!

I grew up on a road, in Kolkata, that was a stone’s throw away from everything that makes Kolkata a food-lover’s paradise. Purnadas Road, was home to me for the more memorable growing years of my life, and when I look back to reasons and seasons that make me the lover of good-food that I am, I cant leave my home-street too far behind. For me, food and planning around food have always been the highlight of my life-primarily because Dad is the greatest avatar of a knowledgeable food-procurer (basically a quintessential Bengali!), and my Ma is the world’s greatest chef! My...
