My Rainsong at Kovalam

Last night, standing upon broken shells and rocks, I could hear only the crashing pounding of the waves and the crunch of the shore underfoot. The sound of the gurgling ocean, a deep black bed of almost alluvial sand that lay between me and distant twinkling lights, purred demurely. Off, not too far, a lighthouse flashed frantically its majestic beam of light to welcome ships home. I am here for the same reason though… to come home…just that I have my own way of doing so.I walked slowly from the crushed beach to the solitary rock. Over the water and out it took me; I recall the...

Kirsten’s Bavarian Dinner

Kartoffelpuffer’-a preparation with potato patties, topped with a dump of vinegar soaked red cabbage. German potato pancakes are a real treat and something Germans miss when they move away from home. Eating freshly made potato pancakes with applesauce in the out-of-doors at a weekly market or carnival is a wonderful way to indulge. I saw several stalls lined up as street carts in India are, at a local Bavarian fair I was taken to. Interesting what the Bavarian consider as street-food! Bravarian Bytes!

Yeah, sure! I have reasons to call it Bravaria! Let me start my story from some years back. Matthias and Kirsten are my closest “new-age” friends. A group of very very spiritual (and totally crazy!) people offer their prayers and offerings to the powerful sun-god, while he is on his way to his own abode, leaving us earthlings behind! There are people who mostly dance, people who indulge in a drum-jam,...

Alimentos Charla – When Food starts talking!

“A beber y a tragar, que el mundo se va acabar” – Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow the world will end! Can’t let go without writing about Spanish food. I have lived in America for a few years, and I have always almost had “Mexican” food. I’ve hardly heard anyone say “Hey! Let’s eat Spanish food tonight!” No, usually exotic tastes tend toward Mexican or Chinese or Lebanese or Italian or Ethiopian. Ok..maybe just a couple of restaurants here and there that serve the conspicuous ‘Tapas’. I think there’s a reason for this. Spanish cuisine is different from just about...

Spain-ing Away

I firmly believe Spain is not a country. I believe Spain is a way of life. Being Spanish by birth makes you lucky. Feeling Spanish by choice makes you happy. And I feel Spanish! Certain things about being Spanish have always made me happy. They live life, as if today was the last day..they hate regrets..they love loud games like soccer..they are historically rebellious by nature..they love expressing happiness(or sadness) through loud forms of dancing …they believe in mid-day siestas…the men love their women dusky or tanned…and most importantly they love food! Good food. I...
